Windows 8: Ballmer's Vindication or Damnation

Carol Bartz recently showcased what happens to CEOs who don't meet expectations -- and, given Yahoo's board may be fired as well, what can happen if a board acts too slowly. Steve Ballmer has been under fire for some time for underperforming as CEO, but one hit could change him from bozo to star if it is big enough, and Windows 8 is big enough.

Xiaomi Phone to get vanilla Android 2.3.5 next month, Ice Cream Sandwich in January

By now most of you may already know that the attractively priced Xiaomi Phone will support both MIUI and vanilla Android ROMs (though not simultaneously on its dual-partition system); but earlier today, CEO Lei Jun confirmed that October will see the release of said device's vanilla Android 2.3.5 ROM, meaning the keen beans won't have to wait long after the Xiaomi Phone's launch in the same month.

More interestingly, Lei also announced that his Beijing-based chums will be rolling out a vanilla 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich build in January, which is about two or three months after Eric Schimdt's expected launch date. Sounds about right if you look at previous releases, and we shall look forward to observing the epic 4.0 battle between the Xiaomi Phone, the ASUS Padfone and the rumored Nexus Prime.

Telus launches Optimus Black in white, doesn't believe in paradoxes

For those who like a good dose of irony with their Cheerios, there's the LG Optimus Black -- now available in white. Like its darker cousin released in Canada earlier this summer, the Black in white (seriously...), will feature the same specs as the original (a 5 megapixel camera, unlimited Skype-to-Skype calling and a 4-inch IPS display) as well as an identical contract-dependant price tag. Starting tomorrow, the phone will be available on the Telus network, but there's no word yet whether its American twin will get the same whitewash treatment. This latest pair of handsets now joins a distinguished list of ebony and ivory favorites: Oreos, tuxedos and Michael Jackson songs (video after the break).

Hi5 Confirms ?Significant? Layoffs, Wraps Them In Mumbo Jumbo Speak

hi5_new%20logo_orangeEarlier today, we heard social network Hi5 was laying off a large number of their remaining employees. When we pinged them about this, we expected the usual "no comment" or simply no response. Instead, here's what we got from President/CTO Alex St. John:
In support of our market strategy to launch next generation social gaming platform by early next year, our operations team migrated the site infrastructure to the Windows Server OS. This enabled us to consolidate servers, reduce data center costs and increase site performance (We achieved a nearly 12:1 reduction in server and database requirements). We have also been building the next generation site in a new architecture, .NET framework, and have moved away from Open Source and Java technology. As we have recently turned the corner on our technology migration efforts we have been able to significantly reduce the number of positions required to support the older hi5 site and are in the process of re-organizing the company to focus entirely on the development and deployment of our next generation social play site.
Did you catch that in there?

Mozilla publishes name and shame list of slow Firefox add-ons, cracks down on tardy devs

Firefox slow-addons list
Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox's slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla's new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, 'slow performance warnings' will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn't enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform 'on-demand performance testing,' so that they can test their add-on before it's deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox's start-up time by 10% -- which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might've been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!

Gamers PWN AIDS-Related Molecular Mystery

A team of players of an online game called "Foldit" took three weeks to solve a problem in AIDS research that has puzzled scientists for years. The problem was to solve the crystal structure of M-PMV retroviral protease. The M-PMV retrovirus enables the HIV-1 virus to replicate. The team of "Foldit" players created a model of the protease that was good enough to let researchers determine its structure.

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

helloexpense
A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You're using it on the go, so you don't have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you're trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It's an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation - a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you're using.
