LightSquared faces Congressional hearing over proposed 4G network, submits revised plan

The LightSquared Express rolled in to Washington yesterday, where the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology held a hearing on the company's proposed 4G LTE network and its potential impact on GPS systems. According to some, the ramifications could be disastrous. David Applegate, associate director of natural hazards at the US Geological Survey, told legislators that interference with GPS mechanisms would make it more difficult for authorities to predict floods, landslides and volcanic eruptions, with a representative from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration adding that LightSquared's ground-based mobile network would pose challenges to weather forecasters, as well. The Department of Transportation also chimed in, telling the committee that the network would likely have an effect on systems used to prevent train collisions and, like other administration witnesses, called for further testing.

LightSquared Executive Vice President Jeffrey Carlisle, meanwhile, defended his company's proposal, pointing to an amended version submitted to the FCC on Wednesday. In the revised document, LightSquared offered to reduce the network's power levels further, while providing a stable signal for GPS augmentation services to use at higher frequencies. "This is not a zero-sum game," Carlisle said, adding that only 500,000 to 750,000 high-end GPS services would be affected by LightSquared's low-frequency alternative (which, the company claims, will cost an additional $100 million to implement). Any interference issues, he continued, stem from pre-existing receiver problems that the GPS industry should've addressed by now. Most of the lawmakers sitting on the panel acknowledged the need to establish broader wireless coverage, but stressed the importance of doing so without jeopardizing critical transit and emergency response systems, with some calling for additional testing. Carlisle countered that previous tests have provided sufficient feedback, but ultimate approval lies in the hands of the FCC, which has not yet offered a timetable for its decision. Hit up the source link to read LightSquared's revised proposal, in its entirety.

Install the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update regardless of your carrier

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update -- never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn't work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team's Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device -- regardless of your carrier.

  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn't listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.
Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart's content. Let's just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we're supposed to receive Mango.

Ask DLS: What's your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What's your primary Web browser?

Smart-TV Space May Never Take Off as Predicted

Internet-connected TVs, often referred to as smart TVs, were supposed to be the Next Big Thing. But so far, they're more promise than reality. The technology is faltering so badly that many electronics firms are reining in plans to offer it.

Android App Review: HD Widgets

 HD Widgets

It seems us Android folk can't live without our widgets. Be it Beautiful, Android Pro, or any other that doesn't come to mind, they're one of the more aesthetically pleasing and practical parts to being on Google's team. For those who're always looking for the best clock and weather combo on a tablet (a title usually defaulted to Beautiful Widgets), say hello to the newest kid on the block, HD Widgets.

HD Widgets is a tablet-only app that looks to bring some of the visual beauty and slickness most people are accustomed to from Beautiful Widgets. Everything is optimized for the tablet's larger screen, and the results really speak for themselves.

HD Widgets comes with a large selection of sizes to choose from, ranging from full screen to header, half-page, and even weather by itself. Some options also have a "small" choice, as well, which usually means the clock isn't taller than the rest of the widget.

There's also a pretty good selection of clocks to choose from, although the extent is mostly what color and what kind of frame. There's a couple of options as far as font, but if you're not interested in either a traditional digital clock font of a Sense clock, you might be wise to look elsewhere. You can also opt for shortcuts instead of the weather, which includes airplane mode, wi-fi, Bluetooth, screen rotation, and brightness. To top it off, you also get to pick the background.

Once you've got your widget customized and placed, you needn't worry about anything else. It'll automatically determine your location (in my case, via wi-fi), and you're good to go. If you're curious about the weather, you can tap the weather icon, and similar to Beautiful Widgets, a full screen weather detail is brought up.

This is where HD Widgets really shines, as it can fully take advantage of the tablet's large screen. Large weather icons are bright and gorgeous, and you're shown really detailed information like sunrise and sunset as well as wind direction and pressure. Your weekly forecast is there, too, with icons and temperatures, just like you'd expect. It's good looking, plain and simple.

The only downside of HD Widgets as of now is that you can't download user-made clocks or weather icons, but honestly, with how slick the built-in icons are, I'm not sure you need to. And even then, that's my only complaint. Fortunately, the developers have their emails public and are taking feature requests and ideas, so I know what I'm going to say.

HD Widgets is only $1.99 for now (an introductory price of ~40% off), so if you're rocking a tablet and looking for some absolutely stunning widgets, I'd hope on this sooner rather than later. It's an excellent app that looks like it's only got room to grow, and two bucks isn't bad at all.

We've got download links and more pictures (like way more) after the break.

HTC Vigor hits the FCC with a dose of Verizon LTE

Verizon's LTE lineup just keeps looking better and better all the time. The oft-rumored HTC Vigor is the latest device to pass through the halls of the FCC whilst sporting Big Red's 4G frequencies, along with a handy dose of CDMA / EVDO. HTC's still keeping an uber-tight lid on all of the details of this phone, however, mandating that all of the juicy secrets remain confidential for now. The Vigor's rumored to have a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, but we're still in the dark despite the phone's fancy new badge of approval. We're just another baby step closer, folks, so feel free to peruse the numbers and graphs in the source link.
