Ask DLS: Cross-platform multiplayer games that work on Android and iOS

askdls
Here's one for our knowledgeable commenters: I recently bought my girlfriend an iPad. I, on the other hand, own an Android device. And now we're looking for games we can play using both devices.

There's no dearth of multiplayer games either for Android or for iOS. But finding multiplayer games that can cross the platform boundary is an entirely different matter.

Jay recently posted Words with Friends which is one such game. It's actually an ideal example, because it's turn-based so you don't necessarily both have to be next to your device at the same time (great for long-distance gaming).

But what other examples are there? What multiplayer games are there that let iOS users play with Android users?

Fat, Folding Logitech Keyboard Case for Slim iPad 2

Logitech has announced a big, fat fold-up keyboard case for the iPad which will make your slim iPad 2 look like a 1990s tablet PC. The Bluetooth keyboard, which charges via USB, actually looks like a great accessory — if you can get past the bulk. The Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad, as it is known, [...]

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

helloexpense
A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You're using it on the go, so you don't have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you're trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It's an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation - a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you're using.

AT&T leaked roadmap for the second half of 2011 has plenty of Android on the way

AT&T Roadmap

It looks like we'll be seeing quite a few Android devices come out later this year on AT&T, according to this leaked roadmap for the second half of 2011.  Besides the Samsung Galaxy S II (supposedly the AT&T Attain) we see listed as the Samsung "Singa" SGH-i777, we also see another potential high end Android device from Samsung as the "Gidim" SGH-i927, which may turn out to be the Samsung slider we all saw earlier, or the Samsung Impulse, another 4G phone.  Also nestled among the various WP7 and BlackBerry phones is the Atrix refresh, the MB865 we've been hearing about.

And of course, we can't forget the other end of the spectrum -- Huawei and Pantech look to be putting out more affordable (and probably less feature-rich) handsets this year as well.  What's a bit odd is what we're not seeing -- namely the HTC Holiday.  We won't read too much into that, as there's certainly other phones coming that aren't on this list as well.  If this holds to be true (remember, these things change all the time) it looks like a great third and fourth quarter for AT&T subscribers and Android fans.

Microsoft Kinect is the Hands-Free Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I hate buttons. I really hate buttons. Hate 'em on my clothes (pro-velcro!). Hate 'em on my phones (touchscreens!). And I really hate 'em on video game controllers. That's why this whole motion-sensor craze in video gaming makes me so happy. I don't have to push anything any more. I just wave my hands around a lot and before I know it, I've rescued the princess. The Microsoft Kinect is an especially rad motion gaming accessory for the Xbox 360, which has all sorts of cameras which let you do stuff without holding a controller at all. Normally, a refurbished Kinect costs about $100. But there's a deal going on that can have you on your couch, waving your hands around just like me, for only $80. -AC

Book Piracy: A Non-Issue

BOOKPIRATEEarlier today, for reasons too egotistical to go in to, I found myself looking back at the columns I wrote for the Guardian back in 2003. Inevitably, with industries as fast moving as media and technology, my 23-year-old self made a whole load of terrible predictions. I dismissed the fad of "cameraphones", for example, but was bullish on red-button Interactive TV. One prediction I'm happy to stand by, though, is that the way to solve media piracy would not be through legislation but through making it easier and cheaper for customers to buy legitimate versions of movies, music and books. Yeah, I know, today that sounds obvious. But back then it remained a "theory" in the way that evolution still does to Ron Paul.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.
