Wifi-only Motorola XYBOARDs shipping in mid-January, pre-order now

MOTOROLA XYBOARD

Motorola has four new versions of the XYBOARD tablet up for preorder. They've dropped the cellular radios as thus the Verizon "Droid" branding as well, and they've shet a few bucks, too. There are 10.1- and 8.2-inch versions, of course. And other than also shedding some Verizon apps, it looks like we're pretty much looking at the same devices here. Pricing is as follows:

  • XYBOARD 10.1 32GB: $599.99
  • XYBOARD 10.1 16GB: $499.99
  • XYBOARD 8.2 32GB: $499.99
  • XYBOARD 8.2 16GB: $399.99

Across the board, that's actually $20 less than what they're going for on Verizon, though you're saving hundreds in monthly charges by going wifi-only. Moto's got them shipping the week of Jan. 18. Hit the link below to preorder.

Preorder: Motorola; thanks to everyone who sent this in!

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

battlepaint
In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you're not even a cube -- just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That's important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal.

Ask DLS: What's your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What's your primary Web browser?

Vuzix designs Smart Glasses to look like sunshades, tout connected transparent display

Vuzix has announced plans to develop a stylish head-mounted display solution in the form of Smart Glasses, through a licensing partnership with Nokia. The yet-unnamed product would integrate a bright, high-contrast display with a pair of seemingly ordinary-looking sunglasses -- sounds like a perfect companion to the ZionEyez in-glasses camera prototype we saw last month. In Vuzix's words:

This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of hi contrast and brightness for outdoor use. The output is then relayed into a 1.4 mm thick plastic waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user's eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real world.

Naturally, the company envisions its Smart Glasses solution as a web-connected device, letting you watch videos or browse the internet while still being able to see-and-avoid pedestrians as you walk on the sidewalk or obstacles while behind the wheel -- try doing that with a Kindle or smartphone (better yet, please don't). Vuzix expects its Smart Glasses solution to start appearing as early as this summer, but we'll be getting an early look next week at CES.

Report: Kaz Hirai To Become Sony President In April

picture-2-620x137Big news from Sony today: according to a report just published by Japanese business daily The Nikkei, Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai, currently the company's Executive Deputy President, will become president as early as April this year. Hirai doubles as the Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment. The move doesn't really come as a big surprise: in March last year, current president Howard Stringer called Hirai the "leading candidate" in the race for the next CEO. If the Nikkei report is to be believed, Stringer will stay on board as Sony's Chairman and CEO.

Nikon D4 hands-on and manufacturer sample images (video)

With the onslaught of CES launches still several days away, the big news today is the D4, Nikon's brand new full-frame digital SLR camera. The 16.2 megapixel DSLR offers 1080/30p video capture, an extended ISO range of 100 to 204,800, a 91,000-pixel 3D color matrix meter and a top high-speed shooting option of 11 frames-per-second. And with the D3 first hitting stores nearly five years ago, this FX-mount successor was long overdue. Earlier today, Nikon held its D4 launch event in Asia, previewing the camera before a group of journalists in Hong Kong. We were on hand for a first look at the massive $6,000 pro body, and were quite pleased with what we saw. Jump past the break for our impressions.
