Actually, Searches For ?Google ? Are Petering Out

Google+ searchesJust last week, Google was promoting the fact that "Google+" was the No. 2 fastest-growing search term of the year in its annual Zeitgest list. And it did have an amazing pop when it hit "10 million members" a couple weeks after launch last summer. People wanted to know what this new Google+ thing was all about. And since it didn't exist the year before, on a percentage basis the growth in the number of searches for the term was astronomical. If you are not paying close attention and hear that "Google+" was the No. 2 search term of the year, you might assume that a lot of people are still searching for it. But you would be wrong. The Zeitgeist site shows all sorts of stats about that pop in searches for "Google+" back in July. What you won't find there is the overall trend of searches for the term, and the fact that searches have been declining.

Last-minute stocking stuffer: ZOMM Wireless Leash

ZOMM Wireless Leash

Here's a fun little last-minute gift for an Android-lover who's always leaving their phone laying around. The ZOMM Wireless Leash, as the name suggests, is a slick little way to help make sure your phone stays nearby.

The ZOMM connects to your phone via Bluetooth. You then register it online and connect to the ZOMM desktop software, which lets you update the firmware and adjust settings, like how far away the puck has to get before it triggers an alarm. And that, in a nutshell, is that. If the puck is separated from the phone, it starts with a little buzz. And then a beep, letting you know that you've got the puck, but not the phone.

The ZOMM also serves as a hands-free Bluetooth speakerphone, and has one-touch emergency dialing to 911 and serves as a panic alarm.

Connecting the ZOMM to our phone was easy enough -- standard (awful) Bluetooth procedure. And it worked as advertised. Walk too far away, and the alarm sounds. The speakerphone, unsurprisingly, isn't all that great. And frankly if we're that close to the phone, we're just going to use the phone's speakerphone. But the easy 911 access is great, especially if you're using the included keychain with the ZOMM. Very handy.

The ZOMM isn't a "find my phone" tool -- it's more of a "hey, don't forget that" tool. It's still up to you to know where your phone is -- or to find it if you don't. But it's pretty darn handy. And while it's not cheap, neither does it break the bank at around $75. Check out ZOMM's promo video after the break.

Samsung releases CES 2012 teaser, hints at upcoming Smart TV products (video)

It's certainly not much, but with just a few words at the end of a YouTube clip, Samsung hopes to grab your interest. The Korean electronics giant has just released a "through the years" style clip that encapsulates over 50 years of advances with its television systems (i.e., the switch to color, rabbit ears, higher resolutions, DVR, 3D TVs, etc.). The clip concludes with the words "Experience the Future of Smart TV" and highlights the company's upcoming presence at CES next month. And yes, we'll be there too. Take a gander for yourself after the break.

You Won't Believe the RIAA?s Pathetic Excuse For Their Own Rampant Pirating [Piracy]

Those nauseating RIAA hypocrites were caught illegally downloading $9 million on TV shows. Now they are giving the same pathetic excuse given to them by the people they accused of pirating songs: "someone was using our IP address." More »

PSA: Verizon users reporting data outages across the US (update: back up)

If you're having trouble getting a data connection on your Verizon-branded handset this morning, you're not alone. We've been receiving a bevy of tips from disgruntled Verizon customers, due to an apparently widespread outage across the carrier's mobile data network. Based on what we're seeing on Verizon's @vzwsupport Twitter feed and forums (linked below), it looks as if both 3G and 4G networks have been affected. We tested some handsets in the San Francisco area, and can confirm that data connections there are indeed down at the moment. We've reached out to Verizon for comment, and will let you know as soon as we hear more.

Update: Verizon's 3G CDMA network appears to be up, but 4G LTE services are still unavailable. Meanwhile, Verizon reps confirmed to us that the company is looking into the outage.

Update: LTE users in New Jersey are reporting that the service is back up, and we're online in New York City as well.

Update (again): And now for something completely different: a statement from Verizon.

Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service is returning to normal this morning after company engineers worked to resolve an issue with the 4G network during the early morning hours today. Throughout this time, 4G LTE customers were able to make voice calls and send and receive text messages. The 3G data network operated normally.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Control4 MyHome app takes up residence on Android while Android@Home is out of town

Home automation provider Control4 has finally seen fit to open up its systems to Android users, releasing a version of its MyHome software for phones and tablets. Already available on iOS and PCs, it lets homeowners with Control4 setups manage their video, music, lighting and more on their own devices with taps and gestures. The apps themselves are free, but naturally one will need a MyHome license to use them, which runs $499 for multiple devices at one location or $199 for a single device. Of course, if you've had one of these installed scraping together the cash probably won't be too difficult, while you're checking the couch for loose change we'll sit back and wonder whatever happened to that Android@Home project we (haven't) heard so much about.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...
